My son's computer running XP had a similar issue last year after it updated, and chkdsk didn't help it. I eventually found someone that told me step by step instructions how to delete the updates by going in through the command prompt. But I do not remember how to do it, and he had all the "KB" numbers listed for me to erase. Does anyone know how to do this, and which "KB"s have been installed or atleast tell me how to find them??
When I finally got time where I could sit down and mess with this thing, I turn it on, and it boots itself up to a "restored version" from over a month ago. Success you might think, I certainly did. But NOT!!! First, my start menue is gone. All the listed programs, and the little icons acroos the bar at the bottom Second, my email account is gone.
It wanted me to set up a new account. It just locks up. I tried to go into the command prompt using the Windows 7 CD as suggested by Vivian Xing, but it will not let me run chkdsk. It keeps saying the drive is right protected and will note me access it. Cannot run any of the "Ren C" commands either. It keeps saying it's an invalid command. This is the exact same issue I am experiencing with my work desktop! I installed all Windows Updates one night before leaving the office and hit Restart.
When I came in on Monday morning my PC gave me the lovely Windows Failed to start launch startup repair recommended routine. After several failed attempts resulting in the lovely "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically! I decided a fresh install was required. I pulled out a new hard drive and installed everything fresh. The first thing I do is install Windows Updates before anything else. Net 4 Framework was installed by itself and the system restarted fine.
I then installed all of the other detected updates "Critical" rebooted and now I am chasing my tail again. And guess what the error is Patches are supposed to protect us from viruses not blow them up in-operable! I also think the XP boot cd was much more effective than the new Startup Repair introduced since the launch of Vista.
Same here. I even replaced a HDD thinking it must be failing drive. Then fresh Win 7 install , all good until I do windows update. After MANY fresh installs, I started updating in sections, and after , , , , , , , it crashed again. Bootrec however wont find any win installations at all O Dear. And now explain it to frustrated clients, to whom I blindly promised, that upgrade from Vista will stop their nightmares I think I found the culprit! After I uninstalled the update , which was dated Dec 14, my computer now starts up just fine!
I've tried shutting down and restarting 4 - 5 times, and works good everytime now. Hope this helps. Same problem here. Just put together a new system asus m4am sysboard, AMD proc, geforce GTX video card and on clean install when i run the windows updates on reboot it goes into system repair and will never fix it. Will not boot up and the only thing you can do is format reinstall and do not load updates. My next step is to load up as many updates as i can except the ones noted above.
I can see this being a problem and at some point in the future i will accidently load the needed updates and blow up my system up again and have to fromat reload again. I have already done this about 6 times so far. I wish someone knew what exactly was happening with the updates instead of just don't install them. Will try to load windows 7 with SP1 included but doesn't look like disk is out yet for enterpise version just pro. Only thing I remember changing was boot order.
Buddy says windows 7 very picky about boot order, HD needs to be first boot device, eventhough it would boot up and go into windows repair this worked. Hope that helps. I have run the "Start-up Repair Program" and got the error code 0x which brought me here.
I plan to try the repair suggested above but I hesitate to reboot to try the fix - once that it's running it works great - until I must reboot. But be patient - i started the computer and the little balloon came up and it said Starting Windows. I left and went to the gas station, filled up with gas and came home - at least an hour trip. When i got home it was still on the same screen. I have the same question, how to uninstall when you can' t start windows. I can start in safe mode but it won't let me uninstall in safe mode.
I have the same problem The only way i've made my computer working again was to format my hdd and reinstall windows 7. Oh by the way if someone find an answer to this problem please reply. I would like to use XPmode in windows 7 but for that i have to update to sp I had over 25 updates to download and install because I didn't do it straight away knowing it would prompt me to shut my computer down every 4 hours - which I cant stand.
After about a week of getting annoyed with the "updates available" icon and text box which pops up, I decided to download the updates, but was not ready to restart the computer. I looked into how to disable those annoying pop ups letting you know your time is ticking down before Microsoft takes over your computer and shuts it down.
I went to the dos prompt and followed instructions I got from a website to disable the messages for 24 hours and my computer was still on the next day. Last night, I finally shut down and then this morning when I went to turn on my computer it was stuck on the "windows is starting" screen for 10 min. I had no choice but to shut down my computer and when it came back on, I had the option of loading normally or loading with repair tool. I picked normal and it re-loaded to the same "starting windows" screen with nothing else happening.
I again, manually shut it down and this time picked the option, "repair tool. I said "yes. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. Welcome to Microsoft Community. I appreciate your efforts in resolving this issue. I will certainly help you with the issue that you are facing.
This issue may arise when there is a conflict with the start-up files or when there are corruption in the boot files. I recommend you to try the following methods to diagnose and resolve this issue. Method 1 :. Disconnect all external devices If any Printer, scanner, camera, or any other USB devices except mouse and keyboard and try to restart your computer. If you are able to boot the computer after disconnecting all external devices, identify the faulty device by connecting them one by one.
If the problem persists proceed with the next method. Method 2 :. Use startup repair and other system recovery options to check if any of them help. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly. What are the system recovery options in Windows 7?
System Restore disclaimer: When you use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed. If the above mentioned method does not work.
You may access the advanced options by following the steps below. If you are unable to boot the computer, then I would suggest you to perform an Automatic repair by booting from the installation disc.

In reply to DruvisMerecs's post on May 31, Still,no luck with updates, but there is a thing, tried to install some updates manually and some worked fine after restart, updates like net framework and platform updates, than i tried install other updates, they was successfuly, but after restart pc goes to logo and than shuts down and gone to repair tool automatically, and again, system restore etc.
